Fencing is a group of three related combat sports.  The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also saber); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent.  Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics.  Most competitive fencers choose to specialize in one weapon only.  Competitive fencing is one of the five activities which have been featured in every modern Olympic Games, the other four being athletics, cycling, swimming, and gymnastics.  The popularity of this ancient art of self defense was on display at high schools in Rhode Island starting in the ealy 1900s.  The annual Rhode Island Interscholastic Fencing (Team and Individual) Tournament started in 1924.  Providence city and nearby city schools challenged for the City High School Championship and the Stone Fencing Trophy named after Dr. Eric Stone of Classical High starting in 1926.    Jean Danguay (fencing-master) was a influential teacher of the sport in the city.  Individual fencers competed for the Herman Hanley Memorial Cup in interscholastic competition.
